Contact tower in water treatment with ozone

Why use a contact tower in water treatment with an ozone generator?

Ozone (O₃) is a powerful oxidant widely used in water treatment for disinfection, removal of organic contaminants, and elimination of undesirable tastes, odors, and color. However, for ozone to be effective, it must be efficiently transferred into the water. This is where a contact tower—also known as a contactor or ozone contact chamber—plays a crucial role.

The role of a contact tower

A contact tower is a vertical vessel designed to maximize the contact time and surface area between ozone gas and water. It ensures that the ozone dissolves thoroughly into the water, allowing it to react with and neutralize contaminants effectively.

Key reasons for using a contact tower with an ozone generator

1. Efficient ozone transfer

Ozone is poorly soluble in water, and without proper mixing, much of it would escape into the atmosphere, wasting energy and reducing treatment efficacy. A contact tower optimizes mass transfer by creating an environment where fine ozone bubbles have maximum exposure to water, often with the help of diffusers or mixing devices.

2. Increased contact time

Effective ozonation depends on both concentration and contact time (often expressed as Ct values). A contact tower ensures that the ozone remains in contact with water long enough to achieve desired disinfection or oxidation levels, which is especially important for pathogens like Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

3. Safety and Containment

Because ozone is a toxic gas, the contact tower also functions as a containment system, limiting the release of excess ozone to the atmosphere. This not only protects operators and the environment but also allows for collection and destruction of off-gas through ozone destruct units.

4. Improved system efficiency

By facilitating better ozone transfer and minimizing waste, contact towers improve the overall efficiency of the water treatment system. This means lower operating costs, reduced ozone generation needs, and consistent treatment performance.

5. Scalability and versatility

Contact towers can be customized for different flow rates and treatment goals, making them suitable for municipal, industrial, and commercial water treatment applications.

Using a contact tower in conjunction with an ozone generator is essential for maximizing the benefits of ozonation in water treatment. It ensures efficient ozone transfer, prolongs contact time, and enhances both performance and safety. As water treatment regulations become stricter and the demand for chemical-free disinfection rises, ozonation systems with properly designed contact towers are increasingly important in delivering clean, safe, and high-quality water.
